Sometimes weekend outings or relaxing day trips are more fun without a destination, but rather a direction. My wife and I enjoy just heading south or west without looking at a map and getting lost, that's when the adventure begins. A leisurely drive through parts of Salem County offers a little of everything to the weekend explorer: discover an area rich in history, antiques, scenery, shopping, and some fine dining. A recent exploration of the county turned up more than a few surprises.
From Philadelphia you could take the Commodore Barry Bridge, stay on route 322 for a ways turn right somewhere (a mile before where the old cottonwood used to stand) and just explore country roads heading toward Woodstown; a nice place to stop and discover quaint shops, pristine 18th and 19th century homes and a lovely café for a light lunch.
Antique lovers and admirers will find an undiscovered wealth of antique shops in the Woodstown – Salem area, a few are listed here: Cross Roads Antiques in Woodstown located at the cross roads of Route 45 and 40 and The Scarecrow Factory 25 East Avenue a unique craft and collectible store are just a couple of places in Woodstown (there are several more). In Salem there are 6 or 7 antique shops on Market Street and Broad Street all within walking distance of each other. Salem is only a few minutes west of Woodstown. Salem seems to be having an antique boom with new stores springing up and a new 12,000 square foot multi-level antiques center in a restored warehouse on Market Street.
Another interesting attraction if you’re looking for antiques and collectibles is the Elmer Auction held every Friday night at 260 Swedesboro Road, Monroeville, New Jersey (only 10 miles from Woodstown). Every auction has Antique & Collectible Glass, Pottery, China, Paintings, Furniture, etc.

There are lots of opportunities to find rare treasure at places such as the Cowtown Rodeo Flea Market or at local yard sales or even on the side of a country road (many people set out collectibles in front of their homes). These are just a few suggestions the truly adventurous in spirit will discover their own Salem County experience and will become regular visitors to this historic and interesting county in South Jersey.
